There’s a lot of enrichment that comes with dog parks. They’re not just for dogs in the city. Dog parks in Southern Illinois are becoming more popular as a safe space to take your dog off leash. Dog parks encourage mental enrichment for your dog and also a social hub for you!

As a local Southern Illinois Dog photographer, I’m often asked about local activities to do with your dog. So, we did the research for you based on the feedback of the Southern Illinois community.

Plan A Fun Adventure Outside At These Great Dog Parks in Southern Illinois

Carterville Illinois Bark Park

The Carterville Illinois Bark Park is a great spot to take your dogs for some outdoor fun. They have covered seating area for you and separate enclosed spaces for large and small dogs. This park has great parking and is close to a playground so you can also take your kids. Additionally, they have agility equipment set up for added fun with your dog!

PetSafe Carbondale Community Dog Park

The PetSafe Carbondale Community Dog Park  was opened to the public 3 years ago. The public raves about the clean and maintained yard, the provided doggy bowls and drinking fountains for dogs. There is also a “Small Dog” area and a “Large Dog” area (for dogs over 35 pounds). The park encourages responsible dog ownership in their community.

Riverside Dog Park

Riverside Dog Park is an off leash dog park established in 2011. The Friends of Murphysboro fundraised for 4 years. Dogs and humans alike can enjoy a separate, gated yard for small dogs and large dogs, shaded areas during the summer and benches. Visitors also enjoy that it is a quiet, secluded dog park with plenty of room for their pups to roam and play!

Prairie Wolf Off-Leash Dog Area

Are you looking for a dog park that’s different from all of the rest? Travel to Prairie Wolf Off-Leash Dog Area. The wording, “off leash” alludes to what takes place here. Prairie Wolf offers a unique dog park experience where dogs can be let off leash to explore in an (enclosed) area of 44 acres – 44!  Dogs can swim in a pond located through gates at the east end of the Off-Leah Dog Area.” The only catch with Prairie Wolf is that unlike most dog parks, this one is not free to the public. However, keep in mind they required a Daily or Annual permit to access the park.

Brent Leh Dog Park

Tucked a bit away in the heart of Edwardsville, Brent Leh Dog Park offers a clean, safe, and welcoming space for local pups to run free. Established in 2018 and later named in memory of beloved local veterinarian, Dr. Brent Leh, this park has quickly become a favorite spot for dog owners in the community. The fully fenced, off-leash area features synthetic turf, agility equipment, and nighttime lighting, making it a comfortable and convenient place for year-round play. Whether your dog loves to socialize or simply stretch their legs, Brent Leh Dog Park is the perfect place to let them roam safely and to their hearts content.
